RAD SKILLS & RIDES
Term 3 - MTB SKILLS SESSIONS For Kids & YOUNG PEOPLE

Dates: Mondays in Term 3, 2026
27th July to 31st August (6 sessions)
Time: 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Where: Walmer State Forest, Djaara Country
Who: For riders who have experience riding single track & are confident with applying fundamental skills when riding - ages 9 to 12 years
Cost: $150.00 for 6 sessions
Clothing suitable for cold & and wet weather is also required. A little bit of rain and we can ride, more than a couple of ml’s or high winds and gusts and the ride is rescheduled.

Where: Walmer State Forest, Djaara Country
Who: For riders who have experience riding single track & are confident with applying fundamental skills when riding - ages 13 to 16 years. We will be learning and refining fundamental mountain bike skills while using MTB Specifics lights.
Cost: $150.00 for 6 sessions
Bike specific night lights are needed. Available through our shop.

Time: 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Who: For riders getting used to riding off road - aged 6 to 9 years. Hand operated brakes are preferred in order to teach skills efficently.
Cost: $150.00 for 6 sessions

What:
MTB skills instruction in a progressive format. Think of it as learning to become a ninja - but on a bike. As your skills progress, unlock the next level of progression.
Focus is on confidence, fun and social connection on a bike in a low pressure environment.
Content may include:
Body Position - using stability and balance for more confidence, flow and safety on descents, ascents and corners
Operating controls - using brakes to slow down and stop with control; using gears for smoother pedaling and energy efficiency
Terrain Awareness
Riding at Night (for those booked into the Night Ride Skills group)
*Specific skills taught will depend on participant’s riding experience and group goals
Included in session:
Bicycle & gear check
Skills Instruction by GSMBC and PMPIA certified MTB Coaches with Wilderness First Aid certification, and Working with Children Check
Pre-requites:
Suitable for bikes 20” and above with off-road tyres and hand operated brakes (pedal brakes are not suitable)
Suitable for those who can ride a bike - this is not a learn to ride session
Night lights for those riding at night
Complementary pre-ride bike check at Rad Cycles & Gear or evidence of recent service

Groups:
Small group sizes (6 riders per coach)
We offer different groups to cater for rider’s experiences and goals - age is not the main determining factor of what group. Once registration is received you will be allocated which time slot your child/young person might be suitable for. This is subject to change after the coach assesses their riding in the first few weeks of class.
Minimum of 4 riders to go ahead
Sessions subject to cancellation due to weather or unforeseen circumstances - there will be make up sessions at the end of the program finish date.

Equipment needed
Well maintained bicycle suitable for off-road riding - 20” wheels and above, will need off-road tyres, pedal brakes are not suitable
(gears, brakes, suspension, chain all in good working condition) - checked off at Rad Cycles and Gear or provide evidence of a recent service.
Helmet that meets Australian, European and US Safety Standards (no cracks, well fitted). NO skateboard or Equestrian helmets please.
Mountain Bike Specific Lights for those riding after 5:00pm. Contact us if you need to buy lights or utilise our Magic Shine Demo Fleet generously loaned by KWT Imports.
Drink bottle (and a way to carry water when riding - either in a bottle holder or hydration backpack)
Clothing suitable for riding conditions (wind and wet weather, sun safe) and protection (knee and elbow pads and glasses are recommended)
Closed shoes (with or without cleats, MTB flats or or sports shoes with a stiff sole)
Gloves noting that full-finger gloves are our preference
Any basic tools your child/young person might already have - for changing a flat tyre and trailside mechanical repairs relevant to their bike set up (e.g. pump, spare tube, C02 canister and applicator, tubeless patch repair, tyre levers, multitool, chain breaker, chain link)
Night time group: bike specific lights with an appropriate amount of lumens (brightness) and battery - please ask about lights we have for sale or let us know what you are using to see if they are suitable. Night lights available to borrow for the first session thanks to KWT Imports providing their Demo Fleet of Magic Shine Lights.
